Sixth-grade students entered the Middle School Dream Career Essay Contest sponsored by Teaching Today®WI magazine. The following students had their writings selected for rewards: Earning a cash prize of $100 was Ella George for her essay on nursing home activities director, and Brynlee Kazda for her essay on vet assistant and helping abandoned horses. Earning an honorable mention and cash prize of $25 was Noah Perry for his essay on computer programmer and Braylyn Quick for her essay on farrier (horse hoof care).
In November, students began exploring their career interests. They had the opportunity to take a career aptitude test to identify interests and strengths and possible career choices. Some student’s career interest may be influenced by important people in their life or life experiences. Many had to do some research to find educational requirements and salary information.
Over Thanksgiving break, students shared their rough drafts with family members to make revisions to strengthen their essay. At the end of November, several students chose to enter their 400-500 word essays in the contest. In early January, the announcement of winners was published. Their essays will be published in Teaching Today® WI winter and spring issues which you can access at http://www.teachingtodaywi.com/home.htm.
