I am the only speech pathologist in the River Ridge School District. I service children in the ages 3-21.
Learning to listen is an important first step toward literacy. Children need to be able to identify sounds, to distinguish one sound from another, and to associate sounds with words before they can begin to use words in reading and writing.
Being a good listener is not as easy as it sounds. Listening is an acquired skill. But unlike reading and writing, listening is not often taught - most of us just expect it to happen naturally.
Being a good listener means more than having your ears open. It involves visualizing, predicting, and questioning what is being said. And hardest of all it means blocking out distractions.
Sign language, articulation (how a child says his/her sounds), language skills, voice, stuttering, and hearing are a just a few things I work on.
If you have any questions or concerns for your child or children in these areas, please stop in or call 994-2715.
